TELECOMS: What You Need To Know In 2019

June 4, 2019

As a result of technology advances across mobile and landline services, the telecoms landscape has been drastically changed over the past couple of years.  This has meant that the decisions and priorities facing businesses have changed too.

The three biggest changes that you need to know about are:

1. The ISDN switch-off

Openreach’s digital telephone network, known as ISDN, has been the backbone of UK businesses since the 1980s and in the last decade has slowly been replaced by newer, more secure and cost-effective VoIP services. Over 50% of businesses have made the move to VoIP technologies and as a result, Openreach will be switching off the ISDN network in 2025, and will no longer be installing ISDN circuits at the end of this year.

This means that any businesses on traditional ISDN services need to consider moving to VoIP technology before then.

The great news is that businesses will be looking to cut their costs as much as 68%, whilst adding a whole range of new features and benefits, not available on ISDN, by moving to these new technologies.

2. The Gigabit Revolution – Ultrafast Broadband

Only 4% of UK premises in the UK have access to pure fibre broadband speeds and we rank 27 in the World for access to fibre.  The Government has committed £30bn between now and 2033 to ensure every premise in the UK has access to ‘Gigabit-capable’ pure fibre broadband, with Ultrafast speeds – classed as over 100Mb - as a minimum.

They have committed £67m to the ‘Gigabit Voucher’ program which is giving small business a £2,500 voucher to cover the costs of connecting to Gigabit-capable services.  These vouchers were launched in April 2018 and are available on a first come first served basis.  At the current rate, the pot is expected to run dry by October this year.

3. Mobile Device Management

Mobile Device Management allows full control and visibility of your mobile devices and has been our fastest growing product of 2019.

Alongside the exponential growth in broadband speeds and provision, mobile devices have seen similar growth and development, and the new 5G network will be putting 500Mb speeds in our pocket.  This means that apps, videos, and the vast majority of mobile services are also growing in size.  One of the challenges facing a business owner is helping your staff realise just how much they are using, and more importantly, ensuring they are not running up excessive charges on their data.  Our MDM solution allows you to monitor and control the mobiles you provide, giving you peace of mind that you won’t suffer from that nasty infliction, ‘bill shock’…

One of the biggest changes is that telecoms can no longer be viewed as a utility.  With the growing number of options and solutions available it is important to make sure you have the right solution in place for your business.
