10 Lessons I've Learned In Business

February 6, 2019

I've learned a lot of valuable lessons in business by reading books, journals and articles, from watching people and the way they interact, but also from the people I've worked with and for. I'm pleased to be able to share these with you.

Probably most importantly though, I've learnt from mistakes that I've made. Here are my musings - and I add, this is purely from my experience or learning;

  1. The best time to start was yesterday. The next best time is now.
  2. It doesn't make sense to hire smart people and then tell them what to do; we hire smart people so they can tell us what to do - Steve Jobs.
  3. What happens if we invest in staff and they leave us? What happens if we invest in staff and they stay?
  4. It is ok to make mistakes in business. Just don't make the same mistake twice. - Brian McMillan (SWW)
  5. Take care of your employees and they will take care of your business - Richard Branson.
  6. "My sales team told me that they did all they could, so it can only be the fault of the customer." - People should understand that they are accountable but for them to take ownership of their work, they need to feel valued.
  7. You've got two ears and only one mouth. Therefore you should listen twice as much as you speak.
  8. You need to listen to your audience.
  9. Treat people as you would like to be treated yourself. - AMENDMENT - Treat people as THEY would like to be treated (courtesy of Mark Jarvis - Business Ninja Contributor)
  10. To work on business growth, spend time 'on the business' and not just 'in the business'.

Just my thoughts and things that have worked for me (with a small amendment courtesy of Mark). Please comment on this article with lessons that you've learned or with things that are important to you.
